Before You Buy

Remember, no other factor has a greater effect on a diamond’s appearance—so choose the highest cut grade you can afford. We recommend an Ideal, Excellent, Very Good, or Good cut so that you are acquiring a diamond that is in the top 25% of all diamonds.

Bailey Couple Color

For nearly two centuries, Bailey Banks & Biddle has been helping people select the perfect diamond. We have learned over the years that them more informed our customers are about the diamond selection process, the more confident and pleased they are with the diamond they choose.

We believe in helping you select a diamond in an informed way, with the confidence that a business that traces its roots back to 1832 inspires. Our Diamond Education guide is designed to help you better understand the characteristics of a diamond and how each one influences its overall appearance.

The Four C's (+1) of Diamond Buying

The criteria jewlers use when grading diamonds and the ones you'll need to understand when shopping for your diamond are the 4 C's: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat. These are considered the most important characteristics of a diamond.

Cut

Clarity

The cut of a diamond is the single most important factor when determining a diamond's sparkle and overall beauty. An excellent cut can give brilliance and sparkle to even a lower quality diamond, while an inferior cut can conceal a flawless diamond's true beauty by leaving it dull and even looking smaller than other diamonds of the same weight.

The color of Bailey's diamonds is determined by the Gemological Institute of America. GIA's color-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues with increasing presence of color to the letter Z, or near-colorless. Bailey's only accepts diamonds with an "I" color or better.

Clarity measures the flawlessness of a diamond by taking into account the size and number of inclusions or imperfections that occur within a diamond. Bailey's enforces strict clarity standards many diamond retailers choose to ignore. GIA gemologists reject flaws that many other jewelers accept, including chips, laser drill holes, and any surface openings.

Only a very small fraction of the diamond ore consists of actual diamonds. The ore is crushed, during which care is required not to destroy larger diamonds, and then sorted by density.
